Historical Scrapbook of Tinton Falls, New Jersey (1976)This historical scrapbook booklet was published in 1976 to celebrate our country’s bicentennial. It is a collection of articles about the history of Tinton Falls, written at different times. Below, we have copies of all the individual articles in the “blue book” and whatever information we have been able to find about their original sources.

1. The Lineage of Tinton Falls, by Avery Lippincott Giles. Traces how the original Shrewsbury Township, formed in 1665 under the Monmouth Patent, was incrementally divided up into many other modern townships.

2. New History of Old Tinton Falls, by James S. Brown. Published in the New Shrewsbury Siren, Feb. 1962. Outlines the history of Tinton Falls from the early Colonial period all the way through the Revolution.

3. Tinton Manor, The Iron Works, from the proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, vol.70 issue #4, by Dean Freiday. Describes the establishment and operation of the iron works at Tinton Falls in the 17th century.

4. The Technique of Colonial Iron Manufacture by Dennis C. Kurjack. Written to describe iron manufacturing at Hopewell Furnace in Pennsylvania. The processes used there would have been the same used at Tinton Manor. Originally from the Hopewell Village Booklet.

5. Tinton Falls Mineral Spring, from They Took to the Waters by Harry B. Weiss and Howard R. Kemble. Past Times Press, Trenton NJ, 1962. Outlines the history of the mineral spring adjacent to the Tinton Falls, especially during the 19th century when it was a destination for those seeking a health cure.

6. The Captain David Augustus Walling Distillery at Tinton Falls, from The History of Applejack or Apple Brandy in New Jersey by Harry B. Weiss. NJ Agricultural Society, 1954. This excerpt discusses the distillery that operated during the 19th century on the property that is now 771 Tinton Avenue.

7. Excerpt from The Historical Collections of the State of New Jersey by Barber and Howe. S. Tuttle, New York, 1844. This excerpt relates tales from the early settlement period, as well as biographical information about Governor Lewis Morris.

8. Chart: The men who were Lewis Morris. There were many men by the name of Lewis Morris, and this chart shows relationships between some of those who were prominent locally in the colonial period.

9. 1885 Directory of Tinton Falls. Details the people living and working in Tinton Falls at that time.

10. Advertisements about the grist mill property. Published by Lewis Morris Ashfield in 1759 and 1765 when he was selling the grist mill and estate.

11. Partial transcription of the first deed to the Tinton Falls area (1674).

12. The Leonard Deed (1676). Contains a hand-drawn map of the area conveyed by the Natives to Henry Leonard, and subsequently deeded to Col. Lewis Morris.

13. Documents relating to the early history of Tinton Falls. This lists early deeds and their sources, from 1664 to 1750. Also contains information about the divisions of local Native tribes.

14. Excerpt from The History of Monmouth County by Franklin Ellis. Originally published in 1885 by R. T. Peck & Co, Philadelphia. This is an overview article relating the history of Tinton Falls including the iron works, Lewis Morris, and the mineral spring.

15. Newspaper extracts from the New Jersey Archives (1779, 1780). These articles describe revolutionary war activity in Tinton Falls.
